The Walking Dead episode 1001 review: Preparing for the Whisperers
By Adam Carlson
Overall impression
I expected The Walking Dead to open the season with a slow burn episode for season 10 by showing us what some of the characters have been up to and how the Whisperers changed the way they did things to this point.
However, what I got was an episode with some great action with walker training on a beach and a cool fight with the undead in the woods where a fire was everywhere. The contrast between those scenes and the ones touching on the bonds that are building between survivors with great dialogue kept the episode fresh and fun.
The ending is great. Carol locking eyes with Alpha when the survivors had crossed the border is not only scary because the Whisperers’ rules have been broken but because of the heartbreak of losing Henry and how fans know Carol can be one tough cookie when he needs to be. Odds are they will be unable to justify their border crossing enough to please Alpha, especially with Daryl and Carol wandering off.
I’ll admit that I was a massive fan of season 9 and was really excited to see what was next, so I might be a bit of a fanboy in my review, but this is exactly what the show needed from a premiere after what I considered to be a fairly weak finale for the previous season. It sets forth a scary situation for the survivors and establishes a tone of terror for the season.
OVERALL GRADE: 8.5/10
