The good stuff
Shedding some light. As a comic reader, I’ve always wondered a bit about what drew Beta to Alpha. The two strong, silent types make for a fearsome duo, but questions about how they got together were addressed in this episode and it makes things smoother.
The introduction of Gamma. It’s nice to see a member of the Whisperers who is right in the middle. Gamma doesn’t have a death wish by challenging authority and that will take her far with this group and having a ceremony to anoint her with the name Gamma was an interesting thing to include in the episode.
Some questioning from Beta. This episode showed that Beta isn’t a blind follower of Alpha. He openly questioned her decisions at times but wasn’t treated like the other Whisperers by Alpha when doing so. He truly is her confidante and right-hand man, and the respect between the two will be a tough bond to break.
Dreaming of the Hilltop. Many of the Whisperers seem to like the idea of how the Hilltop is living. .and Beta definitely doesn’t enjoy that one bit. They saw livestock and normal living, which prompted them to dream of that kind of lifestyle. But fear of Alpha should make them stay in line…and if not, it will create interesting internal conflict.
The mask! Beta’s mask made of his best friend’s face gives even more strength to his character and seeing he took his shirt to wear under the jacket gives it that extra oomph. It’s great that a constant reminder can be made just by looking at Beta of the struggle he has made.
