The Walking Dead episode 1002 review: I want my baby back
By Adam Carlson
Overall impression
Honestly, it’s a bit early in the season for an episode that doesn’t show any of the survivors from the Hilltop, Alexandria, or their allies. After such a long wait to get back to The Walking Dead, it’s too soon to not have Michonne, Daryl, Carol, and the characters we’ve grown to love on the screen.
Instead, focusing on the backstory of the Whisperers was a bold choice for the second episode of season 10. There was some great information revealed about how Alpha and Beta work and who Gamma became, but how that will be useful in the future has to be questioned because it would be disappointing to spend an episode on this.
The main thing to take away from this episode is that Alpha led the group to think she killed Lydia. Fans know Lydia is alive and well and actually flourishing in Alexandria, so it would be interesting to see what happens if one of the Whisperers were to learn that she is still alive.
Otherwise, spending time showing the bonding between Alpha and Beta feels unnecessary. By now, it’s already been pretty well established that the two have a unique relationship to survive the zombie apocalypse and this time wasn’t really needed to date that connection. Unless something happens to Beta to bring up his best friend’s face or shirt, it seems like a lot of time used on something that won’t likely be referenced again.
Still, this was a well-acted episode. Samantha Morton and Ryan Hurst acted the heck of out this and the addition of Thora Birch is definitely welcome in the dynamic. It wasn’t a bad episode by any means, but it seemed at least partially unnecessary.
The stage is set for a faceoff after the border was crossed. We’ve seen a bit of the past and present from both sides so far this season, but now it’s time for the horror to start back up again.
EPISODE GRADE: 7.5/10
