Netflix debuted its newest thriller Eli just in time for Halloween, and this thrilling haunted house story has a Fear the Walking Dead connection.

There’s nothing like a haunted house horror movie to get you ready for Halloween, and the newest thriller from Netflix delivers the terror with Eli. Eli is the story of a sick boy and a possible cure that comes at the hands of a doctor whose treatment facility seems to be harboring some chilling secrets, and it has two big ties to Fear the Walking Dead.

Fear the Walking Dead showrunner Ian Goldberg, David Chirchirillo and Fear the Walking Dead writer and co-producer Richard Naing served as writers for this terrifying movie that comes with a massive twist. Just when you think you know what’s going on, think again. Eli is not what you think it is, and that’s what makes it so much fun to watch.

Eli (Charlie Shotwell) and his parents travel to the treatment facility of Dr. Isabella Horn (Lili Taylor) to seek help for the autoimmune disorder that has kept him locked inside a clean room at his house for four years. He has to wear a hazmat suit just to go outside, and even then there are risks.

Unfortunately, Horn’s treatments seem to be making him worse, and it doesn’t help that the house is filled with unhappy former residents with an agenda of their own.

Thanks to movies like the Sixth Sense and Get Out it has become quite a common occurrence to be led down one path during horror films only to find that all is not what it seems. Eli is the kind of movie that takes you down several paths at once, and even when you think all of the cards are on the table there are still several twists yet to come.

Eli comes loaded with all of the jump scares you want in a horror movie with enough of a mystery to keep you wondering what is happening. And it delivers on all fronts. The plot develops slowly at first  to ensure that there is no question that this boy needs help, and it’s when help arrives that everything starts to unravel.

This isn’t the first time Goldberg and Naing collaborated outside of Fear the Walking Dead. They also wrote the 2016 thriller The Autopsy of Jane Doe.

Eli was directed by Ciaran Foy and is available to stream now on Netflix.
