Negan has proven himself to be a great fighter, but what will it take for Alexandria to allow him to take arms against the Whisperers on The Walking Dead?

The Whisperers are a scary group of villains on The Walking Dead. Not only do they wear the faces of the dead but they move among them, their masks disguising themselves from walkers as well as humans who may oppose them.

As humans, Alpha and her group have proven themselves to be capable fighters, especially the hulking Beta. However, their ability to weaponize the dead and lead them to any location makes them scarier than any other group introduced on the show so far.

To combat the Whisperers, the survivors will need as much help as possible. That means it might be time to unleash Negan on them since he is a highly capable fighter and may be able to get in the minds of Alpha and Beta.

So, what will it take for the people of Alexandria to have Negan stop picking tomatoes and start killing walkers on The Walking Dead? That’s what we asked our panel.

Sara L. says

I think that time is closer than it appears honestly. They are already getting extremely paranoid. The whisperers trumped anything Negan and the saviors did, by quite the number. Also, Negan was always really upfront with everything he was about to do. “I’m going to bash a head in”, “anyone moves and someone will pay”, “I’m going to take half your stuff.” You never have ANY clue what the whisperers would do. SO if the herd is released or war is started he will be a soldier for sure.

The season 10 trailer showed us that Negan will get his chance to prove himself to Alexandria at some point, but most of the community members won’t be happy about it. Considering the hatred that most characters still have for Negan years after All-Out War, it seems like he will be used as a last resort when the militia gets seriously desperate. The impending war with the Whisperers is likely to bring along a lot of casualties, so eventually, we will see Negan on the battlefield. Whether or not he can be trusted is another story.

Negan’s role in the Whisperer conflict will likely be how the redemption arc being shoved down our throats will manifest this season. While I appreciate the idea of Negan turning his life around to do the right thing for once, I don’t think I will be able to fully accept him as a good guy after what he did to Glenn and Abraham.

Renee says

Maybe Negan will just escape and head out to fight on his own. He hasn’t come in to contact with the Whisperers and he may think he can handle them on his own to prove himself. If not, I think the Alexandrians will wait until the last possible minute before they would free him. They have ever reason NOT to trust him. Yes, he has made some improvements but too much has gone on for them to forget so easily.

Adam says

Negan has been hearing about the Whisperers but has yet to actually come face-to-face with one other than Lydia. He has to be getting sick of living in a cage and only getting out to pick tomatoes in the garden.

He has already learned there isn’t anything else out there for him, so it might be time for him to do what he does best: intimidate and destroy. It shouldn’t take much more of a threat from the Whisperers to call on his services, especially if he can work with a trusted member of Alexandria’s community. It looks like it will be Aaron from the season 10 Comic-Con trailer, but sometimes those can be misleading.
