Hallucinating on speed with revenge on her mind, Carol killed a Whisperer in episode 1003 of The Walking Dead. Did this act start a war?

As soon as the Whisperers appeared on television, fans knew there would be a major conflict between them and the survivors. Tensions have been escalating on The Walking Dead, with the body count piling up on both sides of the conflict.

Carol’s actions in episode 1003 might be just what needed to happen to get a war started. She was forgiven for drawing her gun on Alpha but killing a member of the Whisperers after chasing them into a school past the boundary might push this conflict into war.

The question was posed to our panel of The Walking Dead experts as to whether or not war is inevitable now that Carol has pushed the ball back into Alpha’s court. Here are the responses!

Sara L. says

Realistically I think Carol started the war whenever she decided to have that stare down with Alpha at the canyon. That probably set into Alpha’s mind for sure that these people will never learn and I think they have been hardcore scheming ever since then. The Whisperers are such a wildcard and you really can’t ever expect what is going on that it wouldn’t surprise me if the winter crossing didn’t set them off.

Jeffrey says

The war was started when the Whisperers killed Jesus with no previously provocation. After that point, both sides have been slowly building up to a full-blown war. There is no avoiding it at this point, and the killing of the Whisperer might just be a necessary push to make things intensify.

Renee says

The war was already started when they wouldn’t return Lydia. This isn’t Carol’s fault. And, if it wasn’t Lydia, it would have been something else. Alpha just wants to watch others’ worlds burn. She is a villain that won’t stop until she gets what she wants.

Adam says

So far, the Whisperers have been oddly reasonable. Killing Jesus was the only unprovoked action Alpha and her group took, but even that was likely in response to Rosita and Eugene crossing over into their land and then the rescue effort afterward. Trying to pinpoint the exact moment when tensions got to a point of no return is hard.

Alpha will see Carol’s actions as an act of war. She gave Carol a pass when she drew her gun and even decided not to unleash her horde of walkers on them after that happened. But taking the life of another of her group can’t go unpunished, and the Whisperers are running out of ways. While this didn’t start the fire, it has the flames burning the brightest.
