Both Daryl and Negan offered some advice to Lydia on how to deal with the bullies in Alexandria in The Walking Dead episode 1004, but whose was better?

It’s nice that there are people out there who still want to help those in need. Case in point, when Lydia was being harassed by a group of those looking for revenge against the Whisperers in episode 1004 of The Walking Dead, two major personalities tried to offer some advice.

Daryl told Lydia to try to ignore the bullying as much as possible while Negan said that she should try to kill them with kindness. Both are interesting approaches to the problem, but it didn’t seem like she took either piece of advice to heart.

But which one of them offered better advice? We reached out to our The Walking Dead panel to find out which perspective on the problem reigns supreme!

Considering Daryl’s advice blew up in Lydia’s face, I’m going to have to go with Negan. I don’t think either advice was very stellar. However, when it comes down to it, Negan does understand her better. He is an adult going through the same things she is and has a better handle on it. Also part of the advice Daryl gave was just to not listen to Negan because of who he was. He didn’t go into details and exactly explain why which left Lydia likely feeling that since she felt her and Negan were so similar that Daryl thinks of her in an irredeemable way as well. Not what he meant of course, but when talking to a teenager you can’t come at the conversation half-cocked and hotheaded, that what teenagers like Lydia do. You have to counter their attitude and talk to them with a better approach, like what Negan did.

If I’m being honest, neither Daryl nor Negan gave Lydia great advice about how to deal with harassment from rude Alexandrians like Gage and Margo. Daryl’s advice to simply ignore them is not realistic, especially given that Lydia is still just a kid who feels lonely and isolated from those around her. Negan’s advice seems a little more sound, but you can only “kill them with kindness” for so long before it becomes too exhausting.

Jeffrey says

I think both Daryl and Negan gave Lydia valid pieces of advice, but neither are perfect. I honestly believe it is up to the adults of Alexandria to protect children such as Lydia from threats. Daryl could have done more to prevent the bullying from escalating to a full-blown murder attempt. I also think it could be smart for Lydia to not to let the bullies win by ignoring them to take away the power they hold. Ultimately, I believe it is important for Lydia to stand up for herself and not take the abuse that Gage and the others throw at her. She has lived a life of violence and the fact that it is continuing in her new life goes to show that Alexandria has failed her.

I like Negan’s advice a lot more, but the problem is the numbers. Even if she is sweet as pie to her bullies, they will always outnumber her runless she can try to make some other friends around Alexandria.

Getting in the good graces of Judith would be a huge step in the right direction and that friendship alone might change the way others look at her. Judith has already been shown to be sympathetic to Lydia, so a connection is already there.

Ignoring a problem never really solves it. Negan knows that from his time as the leader of the Saviors.
