Alpha made some adjustments to her strategy to her plans in episode 1005 of The Walking Dead, but what exactly could this plan for The Whisperers be?

The Walking Dead has put the survivors in a lot of danger in season 10. The biggest of their problems revolve around the Whisperers, a group led by Alpha and composed of people wearing masks made from the dead and a massive amount of the undead to use as a weapon.

Alpha has made a lot of adjustments to her plans since her introduction, making compromises for borders and even killing several of the survivors as a display of her power and resources. But it sounds like her plans are changing again.

The Whisperers are poisoning the water with walker blood, making trees fall down to break walls down, and have been spying on the survivors. However, Alpha took Gamma’s mask and talked about how that could be part of a bigger plan.

What is this plan involving a ‘new mask’ and does it involve the mercy that Aaron showed to Gamma? We asked our panel of The Walking Dead experts that very question!

I think I am totally wrong in my answer but for some reason, I took this quite literally when she said it. I took it as if when Gamma succeeds in her plan of using Aaron for a particular gain that Gamma would then kill Aaron and cut off his face. Then take her mask off, and have some weird ceremony of graduating to an Aaron face mask.

I write notes during the episode and that was my understanding at the time. Now I am more thinking that “new mask” might mean no mask and she wants to infiltrate the communities or hatch a new creative plan that comes at this war in a totally different way than anyone is expecting.

Alpha’s “new mask” plan may be referring to infiltrating the communities from the inside. While the Whisperers have been successful in disturbing the peace at Hilltop and Alexandria from the shadows, it would be a lot easier to cause unrest if they had someone on the inside.

Alpha may see Negan or Aaron as potential targets for this role, or she may end up choosing somebody from within the Whisperers to become part of the community and cause problems from the inside. Time will tell, but the plan involving “new masks” may end up being the Whisperers removing their own.

Jeffrey says

I genuinely have no idea what Alpha has up her sleeves for the next move against the communities. The fact that she is so mysterious and ruthless at the same time really scares me. I have a feeling she is about to do something crazy that will result in even more deaths than this conflict has caused already.

Adam says

The idea of a “new mask” for the Whisperers could mean any number of things. However, one of the most likely has to do with her knowing that Aaron’s kindness could be a weakness they could exploit. My guess is that Alpha wants Gamma to approach Aaron as a person in order to gain some trust and possibly go inside the walls of the communities to warn Lydia about impending attacks and plots, using her real face as a mask to hide her devotion to the Whisperers. Alpha can’t risk all the Whisperers finding out that Lydia is still alive, but she seems to have trust in Gamma.
