The Walking Dead, What It Always Is: Things To Note
By Liam O'Leary
1) As the episode begins, Kelly is hunting a wild hog in the woods, and passes between two ropes, bearing what look to be tattered flags. Who left them? The people who would, ultimately, become the walkers that interrupted Kelly as she tried to retrieve the hog? Are they the remnants of Amelia and Milo’s group?
2) Throughout the pre-title scene, Kelly is plagued by her hearing going in and out, nearly causing her to not notice a walker sneaking up on her. While the show has tackled how gunfire can damage one’s hearing, this is the first time it’s really addressed how dangerous that hearing loss can be in a zombie apocalypse.
3) The lyrics of the country song Magna is listening to after Yumiko returns from getting a status report on the community (“I’m used to dinner and drinks, but now all we ever do is fight”) is some pretty on-the-nose foreshadowing of where the pair’s relationship is going.
4) When Magna explains to Yumiko why she didn’t notice the theft of the root cellar, she says “The sickos showed up at the breach”. Considering how long they’ve been at Hilltop (Who, largely, call the dead “walkers”), it’s nice to see Magna (At the very least) retain her group’s name for the dead.
5) Considering how gas was going bad in the latest season of Fear The Walking Dead (Which is, by this point, several years ago), and the fact that the Sanctuary isn’t around to make ethanol anymore, how, exactly, is Daryl fueling his motorcycle?
