Who’s Eugene Talking To?

You could be forgiven for forgetting that back in episode 6, “Bonds”, Eugene’s Soviet-suped-up radio finally lived up to its promise by connecting Eugene to a mystery woman in a mystery location. While the show left the situation hanging, for some viewers the question is not what will come from this, but how closely will it follow the comic storyline?

In the comics, Eugene’s evolving friendship with the mystery woman leads the story towards the Commonwealth and its related expansion of The Walking Dead world. One could safely assume that the show is taking a similar path, but given their penchant for remixing stories in the most unexpected fashion (see Dante versus his comic counterpart for example), it is entirely possible that this story could evolve with some unexpected twists.

Could Eugene’s vulnerable nature – particularly in his post-Rosita mindset – make him open to manipulation by outside forces? Or is his radio romance on the level and could Eugene be the person who finds the seemingly only other good group out there?

Also pivotally, could this contact with the wider world be the door through which Maggie Rhee makes her much-lauded return?
