Who Released Negan?

Perhaps the biggest question coming from season 10 so far is just who released Negan from his Alexandrian cell?  At first, it seemed his acolyte Brandon was the culprit, given his obsession with putting Negan back on his rightful leather-clad throne, but it seems it was not the case. So which Alexandrian pulled back the Negan catapult and sent him flying towards Alpha?

An obvious candidate is Carol. She’s been playing by her own rules, and we saw her tell Daryl the fuss over Negan was a distraction that Alexandria didn’t need, so it’s possible she took matters into her own hands. However, surely Carol would be smart enough to know that focus would then move on to finding Negan and utterly defeat the purpose?

Alternatively, Father Stabby McStabface Gabriel could be the one who had taken his fill of Negan’s witticisms and let the man have his freedom as thanks for saving Lydia. Gabriel certainly proved he’s capable of surprises this week.

However, perhaps the most likely candidate is also the most surprising – Daryl. Could it be that Daryl realised he could make a deal, give Negan his freedom in return for the favour of taking out Alpha? Despite their history, or perhaps because of it, Daryl knows if anyone can get to Alpha, Negan is the man. And unlike his fears about his best friend Alpha-seeking-missile Carol, Daryl doesn’t care if Negan gets hurt in the process.

It may be that Negan was Alexandria’s underground nuclear weapon equivalent to Alpha’s horde, and someone smart realised that.
