Season 10 of The Walking Dead gave fans a major cliffhanger of a midseason finale when trapping survivors inside a cave with a massive horde of walkers.

Things look bleak for many of our favorite survivors on The Walking Dead. The midseason finale left many important characters inside a cave where the Whisperers were storing their army of the undead and now they seem as though they can’t get out.

Fans have to wait until the show returns in February to find out what will happen with this situation, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun to speculate on how the group will get out of this pickle when the hit AMC show returns.

For that, we reached out to our panel of The Walking Dead experts and found out what they think will happen to Carol, Daryl, Aaron, Magna, Jerry, Connie, and Kelly. Here is what they had to say:

Joe says

With seemingly thousands of walkers filling the cave and very little light to be found, I imagine that the survivors will suffer at least one or two losses before they escape. We see Jerry in trouble during the season 10B trailer, so it’s clear that getting out of the cave won’t be a cakewalk. Perhaps this situation – and the probable loss that will likely come with it – will finally be the wakeup call for Carol that her quest to get vengeance for Henry needs to be carried out in a more well-planned manner.

Jeffrey says

This cliffhanger really gave me a similar feeling of dread to when the survivors rushed into the clearing only to be surrounded by Saviors and forced to their knees in front of Negan. I can definitely see one or more of our characters meeting their end in this cave while trying to escape. It would be tragic, but I’m thinking we may see Kelly sacrifice her life to save Connie. The same could happen with Jerry dying to save Carol and perhaps giving the group an escape. I believe Alpha has some more nightmares to stir up for the survivors in the cave to make things even more dangerous when the show returns.

Dawn says

I suspect they will attempt to escape using tunnels. I don’t think Jerry is in trouble as the trailer appears to depict but that he is failing to grab someone else rather than others grab him. I suspect Connie will die somehow saving or sacrificing herself for Kelly. Magna will have some kind of story development, possibly blaming herself for Connie.

Neva says

with the darkness and unfamiliar nature of the cave, I think there will be some close calls with walkers and some scary moments. there are lots of nooks and crannies for whisperers to hide. The need for silence and the way sound travels in caves would test even a seasoned tracker like Daryl.

Separating to look for a way out wouldn’t be a smart move, it would be too easy to get lost even if they marked the way. It’s a perfect trap, using natural resources and the kind I would expect from someone like Alpha.

I’m hoping it leads to an awaking for Carol and she realizes her recklessness in her hunt for revenge not only endangers herself but others she cares about. She’s a much better strategist when she’s not blinded by rage. The Carol prior to the loss of henry would never have blindly walked into this trap.

I’m 50/50 on whether or not everyone survives this challenge. On one hand, you have a group of people who have a strong survival instinct and the skills to handle pretty much any situation, but you also have them in a unique setting, a hoard or walkers and whisperers waiting in the wings and their own internal struggles. (carol is claustrophobic, Jerry is a larger man in narrow passages, Connie and Kelly have hearing loss, Magna doesn’t trust anyone outside her group. Whatever happens, February can’t get here soon enough.

Adam says

It’s time to play the guts game! Strangely, the survivors haven’t covered themselves in the undead to walk among them often on The Walking Dead, but it was something that was a major part of the story on Fear the Walking Dead for quite a while.

Even though it made Father Gabriel sick and lose part of his vision, there aren’t a lot of alternatives for the survivors at this point. They need to get out of this cave and fighting each walker in the ocean of undead seems like an impossible task to take on.

Part of me wonders if Gamma will be responsible for helping to divide the herd and make them more manageable because of her guilt for leading them into a trap. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking. Either way, I don’t think there will be a major death in the cave when the show returns.
