She may not have won major awards for her role as Michonne, but Danai Gurira has delivered many award-worthy performances on The Walking Dead.
Another awards season is coming and it’s yet another year where The Walking Dead is shut out of consideration for any major awards. The popular AMC zombie drama is halfway through season 10 and has yet to be noticed by the major TV awards.
Sure, it’s a genre show, and genre shows usually are a tough sell for mainstream awards. But that doesn’t mean the actors on The Walking Dead aren’t giving everything they have to bring these characters to life. Danai Gurira’s immense talent is finally now being recognized in the film world but she’s given performances that are just as compelling and nuanced on The Walking Dead.
While no one can question Michonne’s bravery or her skill with a katana Danai really shines when she’s getting to show Michonne’s often hidden emotional side. Michonne could easily have been a caricature with her incredible fighting skills but Danai has managed to make Michonne a balanced and multi-dimensional character instead of letting her become a one-note trope.
The Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and Emmy Awards may never release how talented Danai Gurira is or the fantastic performances she’s delivered or the multi-faceted character that she’s shaped Michonne into but The Walking Dead fans know that how truly special Danai is.
