1. Michonne Faces Her Scars

Season 9, episode 14 “Scars”

It took a long time to get a Michonne bottle episode but it was worth the wait. “Scars” was a masterful episode that showed a pregnant Michonne floundering without Rick and trying to stay strong for Judith and for the rest of the community. When her friend Jocelyn shows up at Alexandria’s gate Michonne has a cathartic reunion with her friend. Being around someone she knew before the world fell had a powerful effect on her and she was able to connect her past and the present in a way that she hadn’t been able to do before. But then once again that hope was snatched away from her.

Michonne and Daryl risked everything to save the kids from Alexandria, and got brutally scarred for it. But it was the scene where Michonne has to kill the kids attacking her that showcased Danai’s talent. While Michonne had no choice but to kill the kids you can see the toll it took on her as the emotions play over her face. Anger, pain, fear, and regret at having to make the decision to kill those kids. The tragedy of that scene could have fallen flat but Danai carried that scene, and that episode, with an award-worthy performance.
