The Walking Dead picks up a SAG Award nomination
By Sonya Iryna
SAG Award nominations were announced, and The Walking Dead picked up a nomination. Will this be the year it finally wins?
Tis’ the season for award nominations and so far The Walking Dead has been pretty much shut out, although it did pick up a SAG award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a TV Series. However, it’s up against heavy hitters Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, GLOW, and Watchmen so it will be interesting to see which show wins.
The Walking Dead has been up against some of these same shows before for the same award. Amazingly The Walking Dead has been nominated for the Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a TV Series SAG Award every single year since 2012. That’s right. This makes the 8th nomination the show has gotten for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a TV series. It has never won. Last year GLOW took the award and the six previous years it went to Game of Thrones.
Considering The Walking Dead is up against both GLOW and Game of Thrones again the show’s chances of winning don’t look great. Predictions are that Game of Thrones will sweep awards season thanks to the epic last season of the show that aired earlier in 2019.
Although The Walking Dead survivors have never been as strong as they are now, so it’s possible the show could finally win. Season 10 kicked off showing an in-depth training session at Oceanside and the survivors were at the top of their slaying game. They might not win the SAG award but they are definitely ready to take on Alpha and the Whisperers.
Why Doesn’t The Walking Dead Get Any Award Love?
It’s a mystery why a show that has been the number one show in its time slot since season 1 and has millions of fans can’t seem to get any attention from the mainstream award committees. Some people think that it’s because TWD is a genre show and has a limited appeal. However, Game of Thrones also was a genre show and it has won a slew of mainstream awards. GLOW, which won the award last year, is also a genre show with a niche following.
The Walking Dead may not get the awards it deserves, but it’s an extraordinary achievement for a genre show to continue for this long and to still have millions of dedicated fans. And TWD universe continues to grow and tell other stories of survival in a time when people need them most.
