Alpha and Emperor Palpatine

As is common with many villains across film and television, both Alpha and Emperor Palpatine are power-hungry psychopaths. What makes these two stand out from others, however, is that they have convinced people to follow them despite their instability and lack of physical dominance. Alpha is by no means weak, but one look at her makes it clear that she isn’t very physically intimidating. Palpatine, meanwhile, is old and feeble with a deformed face from a battle with Mace Windu. From the outside, both of the villains are clearly evil but don’t look like they’d be hard to take down.

Where they both draw their strength is that they are master manipulators. Alpha managed to convince her fellow Whisperers that their way of life before the apocalypse will only get them killed and that she is the only one who can ensure their survival. Her cult-like following came from making others feel like they need her, similar to how Palpatine convinced Darth Vader – then Anakin Skywalker – that he needs Palpatine in order to save his wife.

The two villains’ similarities don’t stop there, as they both also have an extremely loyal henchman at their side that will protect them even when they could easily overpower their leader. Palpatine had Darth Vader as his servant throughout the films, with the former Jedi protecting the Emperor even at the expense of his own son. In the end, Vader realized that he was in the wrong to protect such an evil man, eventually killing Palpatine (or so we thought!) out of love for his son. Alpha, meanwhile, has Beta by her side to hold off any challengers to her leadership position with the Whisperers. Similar to Vader, however, Beta might be growing more discontent with his leader after her hypocrisy in dealing with her daughter, Lydia.
