Samantha Morton speaks out about abuse as a child
By Renee Hansen
Recently, The Walking Dead’s Samantha Morton spoke out about abuses she suffered during her time in foster care.
Samantha Morton, who portrays Alpha on The Walking Dead, spoke out about abuse that she experienced as a child while growing up in foster care. She stated that the abuse she and friends had to endure was “equivalent to hell.”
Morton has received apologies from public entities but she doesn’t feel that it does justice to what she endured. The homes Morton lived in have been closed but there are a total of 13 homes where former residents have made claims of abuse. Morton has also stated she felt like a criminal by publicly addressing what she went through. She felt that once she spoke out the police turned their focus to her and expected her to justify the claims. She understands that the police have jobs to do but it is often why people don’t speak out about these thing because it is extremely traumatic for the abuse victim to relive.
Woman’s Hour has the wonderful interview with Morton regarding her early years leading up to her acting career. My favorite quote from this interview was “I was feral but I was around some amazing people as well.” Morton has shared that her childhood was filled with poverty but she does remember having good times with her “ragamuffin” siblings and friends.
There is no question that Samantha Morton is a strong, inspiring woman who has overcome so much. I love that we are able to have such a wonderful role model as part of our Walking Dead world.
I hope that Morton’s courage to speak out will encourage others to do the same and that there is a positive outcome to her taking these steps to see that justice is served.
