Several important survivors are trapped in a cave following the season 10 midseason finale of The Walking Dead, but who is to blame for setting the trap?

The Walking Dead left fans wondering about the fate of a group of survivors who fell into a cave filled with walkers in the season 10 midseason finale. The situation looks dire, and it will be interesting to see how it is all resolved.

While the resolution of this issue will be revealed in the second half of the season, the question of who is responsible for this the trap. Of course, the mastermind is likely Alpha. However, there are more forces at play here.

It was information from Gamma about the location of the mega-herd of walkers, but the question of whether she was attempting to help the survivors by giving the location or lead them into the trap has to be discussed.

We reached out to our panel of The Walking Dead experts to ask if they think Gamma was trying to help or hurt the survivors. Here is what they said:

Joe says

After hearing about her baby nephew’s survival and then seeing that Alpha lied about killing Lydia, I think Gamma is completely disillusioned with the Whisperer way of life. She realizes that Alpha isn’t practicing what she preaches, and that maybe there is a better life out there that doesn’t require sacrificing family and absolute loyalty to an unstable leader. Thus, I think her intentions were pure in terms of helping the survivors, but Alpha had already realized that there was a mole within her ranks, leading to the survivors falling into the cave trap.

Jeffrey says

Gamma might be opening her eyes to how horrible life with Alpha is. After the shocking revelation of Lydia being alive, it has to be weighing heavily on her that she sacrificed her own sister to save someone who lied about making her own sacrifice. The fact that Gamma took off her mask and told Aaron her real name makes me think she is slightly more trustworthy. I don’t believe she tricked the group into the cave, but I’m not fully convinced just yet that she is going to fully betray the Whisperers.

Dawn says

I think Gamma was genuine, but Alpha saw her weakening grip on her and played her. I believe the herd was genuinely where she said they were, then Alpha moved them and laid the trap for Carol to fall into. She can read Carol so well, I believe she is able to read Gamma just as well.

Neva says

This is a tough one. after finding out Alpha lied to her about Lydia, I could see Gamma giving up the herd, but Gamma has also had Alpha’s influence long enough that I could also see her giving false info to entice the others into a trap. Aaron being her contact and the promise of seeing her nephew along with Alpha’s lie being exposed vs the cult leader hold Alpha has over her people have me changing my mind daily in regards to Gamma’s trustworthiness. On a side note, Thora Birch is doing a fantastic job as gamma and I’m looking forward to seeing more of her in the back half of the season

Adam says

I want to trust Gamma. I want to think that she has figured out that Alpha doesn’t have her best interests in mind and the Whisperer way of living isn’t really living at all. In the preview for the second half of season 10, Gamma is seen telling survivors about the trap, but is this out of guilt for setting the trap or explaining she had nothing to do with it? Personally, I think Alpha knew she could use Gamma to spread that information and did so successfully. This should be enough to pull Gamma away from Alpha’s clutches.
