2019 is almost over and it’s time to make resolutions for The Walking Dead characters in the New Year. Here’s what Michonne needs to do in 2020.

2020 will be a big year for Michonne, Danai Gurira and The Walking Dead. Gurira is scheduled to leave the show in the second half of season 10, and that means fans will be saying goodbye to Michonne. With the stakes higher than ever, here are some goals that Michonne needs in 2020.

The last time we saw her in 10A she was sailing off with Virgil, while unbeknownst to her a large group of her friends were stuck inside Alpha’s cave full of walkers. She’s hoping to find supplies that will give her people an edge over the Whisperers, but she also needs her people to be alive for that battle.

Danai Gurira’s contributions to The Walking Dead are too numerous to list. Though some of Michonne’s best moments came when she was with Carl and Rick, Gurira has been able to show the fierce side of Michonne as she defended Alexandria in 9B and helped keep things going in 10A. “Scars” will forever be a master class in acting after her breathtaking performance.

Now, as 2020 approaches and Michonne’s time is limited, here are the things she needs on her list of New Year’s resolutions:

Don’t Give Up

Michonne is the beacon of hope for the communities. She endured the loss of Carl and Rick but she also managed to raise Judith and RJ by herself (but with the support of the community, surely) in the face of unspeakable odds. Things are about to become more difficult before they get easier, so for everyone’s sake they need to know that Michonne isn’t giving up.

People look to Michonne for guidance. Though she had a tough love approach in 9A, we have since learned that she was only acting out of an abundance of caution. She needs to give the community the reassurance they need to fight the Whisperers, and knowing Michonne that’s exactly what she will continue doing.

Lead By Example

One of the things that sets Michonne apart from many of the other characters is that she is always leading by example. Though it was hard for her to turn away from the other communities in season 9, she was only doing it because she was trying to protect her people. No matter how hard it was, though, she did it. Even now, she makes decisions and she sticks to them.

When the battle against the Whisperers takes place, Michonne will no doubt be at the forefront of the fight and we can only imagine that she will empower Judith to fight, too. (Though the youngster probably won’t be on the front lines) By fighting with everything she has, even when it means she could lose her life and leave her children without their mother, it shows the people around her how serious she is about what she is doing, and that when you believe in something you follow through no matter how hard that might be.

Compassion With Strength

Michonne and the other survivors will be victorious against the Whisperers. That much we can safely assume, though we don’t know the costs of that victory. However, this is not the first time her group has been victorious in battle. Following All Out War there was a question of what to do with the Savior prisoners. We have to think that there will be members of the Whisperers who want asylum after the fight.

It would be easy enough to turn them away, but it might be advantageous to keep some of them around. Look at Alden. One of Michonne’s greatest strengths is her compassion, which also stems from honoring Carl’s memory. Michonne will send a powerful message if she can balance compassion when the time comes to decide the Whisperers’ fates.
