The Walking Dead showrunner revealed that fans can expect a cliffhanger ending to season 10 as the midseason premiere looms.

In an interview with EW The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang confirmed that season 10 will end with a cliffhanger, although she didn’t give any details about the potential cliffhanger storyline. She also said in the interview that fans should be paying close attention to each episode in the back half of season 10 because important things happen in each episode.

That won’t be a surprise to fans. Season 10 has been packed with Easter eggs, references to The Walking Dead comics, and throwbacks to older seasons of TWD. Fans who also read the comics may assume that the cliffhanger ending of season 10 will have something to do with the Commonwealth story arc from the comics. However, the show often remixes stories and characters from the comic and deviates from the linear arc of the comic so there’s no guarantee that the next big arc will be the Commonwealth storyline.

Still, the voice that Eugene hears on the radio and the announcement that Paola Lazaro will be joining the cast as Princess in season 10 are both strong indicators that the cliffhanger could be related to the Commonwealth storyline. With the Whisperer War bringing the Whisperers arc to a close in the back half of season 10 it’s time for the show to move to the next chapter of the survivors’ story.

The cliffhanger could also be related to Michonne’s exit, which hopefully will be connected to some sign for the survivors that Rick Grimes is alive and will link the show with the upcoming The Walking Dead film centered on Rick Grimes and what happened to him after Jadis saved his life after the bridge explosion.

Cliffhanger Season Finales

The Walking Dead has done several midseason finale and finale cliffhangers with mixed reactions from fans. The most infamous cliffhanger season ending was the season 6 finale, “Last Day On Earth” which put the survivors into the precarious lineup and gave fans Negan’s long-awaited introduction. Fans had to wait through an entire summer hiatus to find out who would end up being used as an example by Negan.

Some fans view cliffhangers as a cheap attempt to get fans to tune into the season premiere and a trope-y and slightly lazy way to end a season. But when cliffhangers are done well they can create a smooth transition between story arcs. It would be nice if this cliffhanger doesn’t involve waiting to see if a beloved character lives or dies, but this is The Walking Dead so uncertain fates come with the territory.
