5) It will never be as…”easy” as The Walking Dead depicts.

Now, I know, “easy” is not typically a word one associates with the things we see in The Walking Dead, but, it’s relative. Just bear with me.

Even before I saw this week’s episode, I saw the picture you’re probably seeing above, with Daryl pointing his flashlight at something, and directing the group’s attention to it. I knew immediately that it meant he was pointing towards some kind of escape route he and the group would use to get out of the cave, and sure enough, they found a collection of stalagmites dotting the floor of the cave, which they used like lilypads to hop across and avoid the horde.

The thing is, in a zombie apocalypse, chances are you won’t find a convenient group of stalagmites just sitting there, waiting for you to island-hop across them and escape a similar situation unscathed. No, you will probably find nothing, and instead, in that situation, be forced to try to climb out that cavern another way, one far more dangerous than what the group ended up doing on Sunday’s episode.

This is because The Walking Dead is a TV show, and need a certain amount of fortunate coincidences in order to keep the story moving forward. If they weren’t there, the group would have gotten devoured at the gates of the CDC and the show would have ended at Season One. Not exactly great television.

But, in the real world, things just aren’t that convenient. Sure, you may get a bit of luck here or there, but, if you think that every time you get into a jam, someone is going to swoop in, or that a door will open, or, you’ll find just what you need, you’re going to wind up dying waiting for a miracle that never came.

What you need to do is genuinely try to understand all the situations you could find yourself in and prepare yourself, physically, mentally, and emotionally for as many of these as possible. This will take a lot of time, and a lot of work, but, then again…nobody said it would be easy.
