5) Until you know a hostile is dead, DON’T assume they are.

As Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead neared its end, we watched as a team of Whisperers found and awoke a bruised, bloodied, beaten, and wounded Alpha. Honestly…she looked terrible. Between the blood and the grime and the blood loss, her face resembled a collage of bruises. She was badly wounded, had been suffering some serious blood loss, and, yet, she kept on ticking.

Boy, after all of that, with Alpha in so bad of shape that she was practically begging Lydia to kill her, Daryl is going to be really unhappy when he realizes that she survived. And that’s my point.

I have to reiterate the toughness of anyone whose survived the zombie apocalypse after a certain length of time. Those who’ve lasted perhaps years in the apocalypse have done so not by dumb luck, but, by toughness and resourcefulness, and things that might put down a lesser person may not be so effective against these hardened survivors.

If you’re getting into a fight with hostiles like this, you’re doing yourself and your group a massive disservice by attacking these hostiles and just assuming whatever you did was “good enough”. Until you know that your enemy is dead, assuming your attack was “good enough” is the sort of lazy approach to problems that is asking for your enemy to withstand your attack, come back and try to succeed where you failed.
