5. RATS!

This scene was certainly out of left field for many fans. Right before this scene, we are caught up in a scene with Yumiko and Kelly. This scene was very sweet and touching, we get an apology from Yumiko about the way she was acting. These two share a nice hug and small conversation about what the future holds. So the last thing viewers were expecting is what happened next.

RATS! Hundreds, maybe thousands of rats! They may have been nothing more than small CGI rats but for many viewers, this was a skin-crawling nightmare of a scene. Comparable to the spider-infested walker from the season 9 premiere. Believe it or not, fear of mice or rats is one of the most common phobias that exist! So it’s no wonder this freaked out so many viewers.

During the course of The Walking Dead, we haven’t seen that many types of animals, so having a scene like this is rather cool and insightful when you remove the frightening aspect of it. Wildlife would understandably be scared and run away during an impending horde attack but this isn’t something we commonly think about when watching the show.

This season of The Walking Dead has brought countless aspects of horror back into the show and this was another small scene to show the many scary sides of apocalyptic life. While everyone might have sprung into action because they knew what this many rats meant maybe the most WTF part of this scene was that these characters have been through so much that they didn’t even give these rats a second thought!
