2. The death of Mary

While the death of Earl might have been the most heart wrenching, Mary surpasses his because of shock value alone. One could argue, with Earl getting so much screen time as a small character that it means death was around the corner. Teasers have shown left him out of future arcs as well. Even Alpha was predictable to an extent, as villains don’t typically live forever. However, Mary blindsided everyone.

So much story has been dedicated to what she went through as a Whisperer, and what her future could hold. Many viewers assumed she would somehow end up raising Adam, or be involved and show a close look at how people from the “wrong” side can end up just being victims of circumstance. She was blooming into a lovely person and it’s a shame she is now gone.

Even how she died was WTF! She managed to lead walkers away and save Alden, Adam, and Kelly. She had the last couple walkers down and fans thought she was okay. Then out pops the jump scare of a lifetime! She turns around and walks directly into Beta’s knife. At this point, we knew she was gone but she continues to fight back until you see the life leave her body.

At least in her final moments, she managed to rip off a portion of Beta’s mask! As we know this isn’t any ordinary mask, he was close to the person he made it from and it also hid who he truly was. Alden also gracious put her down. At least as fans we can take solace in knowing she never had to walk with the Whisperers again even if it was in undead form.
