This week’s episode of The Walking Dead picks up where “Walk With Us” left off. Is a new battle about to begin? Here’s your recap of “Look at the Flowers.”

“Look at the Flowers” begins with a flashback. Negan is in his jail cell and he hears someone approaching. Thinking it’s the Council coming to give him their decision, he is shocked when Carol walks in. He figured it would have been Father Gabriel. Carol asks if Negan really wants forgiveness, but he’s not apologetic. He’s looking for his last meal and he’ll be on his way.

Carol isn’t there for the Council, and Negan starts to see that. He would have guessed that she’d be ready to go after Alpha, and he’s not wrong. In fact, that’s what she’s there for. He smiles, approving her “stones” because he knows she’s a “certified badass.” He points out that he could mess up an assassination attempt, too, and he makes it clear that no matter what people think of him, he’s not into the idea of Alpha wreaking havoc on Alexandria. Carol wants it done, and she knows it will help everyone.

Negan wants to know what he’ll get out of it, and she says no one will forget what he did unless he does something big. If he brings her Alpha’s head, people will remember him for that. He asks for her word, and she replies that he has to do it fast.

Back in the present, Carol places Alpha’s head on the pike. Negan asks if this is what she wanted and she nods. Negan is ready to leave and start spreading the word of what he did. She wants to know what took so long. He says it took so long because he needed to work on it so that he didn’t get killed himself.

Carol tells him that she’s not going back, not yet, anyway, and he should wait for her. He wants to know when she’s going to figure things out because he knows he’s a dead man if he goes back without her. She reminds him that he’s free now, so he can do whatever he wants while she’s alone. And she needs time.

Cue the credits, here we go! (Note the pause in the credits where Danai Gurira’s name once was)

Diane walks into the cabin where everyone has gathered. Jerry reminds Ezekiel that everyone is safe and Ezekiel, as he tends to his neck, says that they got lucky. Jerry is ok with that, but Ezekiel is not ok with failing. His mistakes sting.

Magna walks in and she gets a big hug from Jerry, who is so happy to see her. He apologizes to her but she says she’s ok.

Eugene tends to Rosita’s wounds. He says he could bring her to see the doctor, Alex, when they find him. She tells him to tell the group about Stephanie. He considers this for a moment, then he gets to his feet and gathers everyone into the room. He starts out saying that he needs to confess something, and then he explains that he has been in radio contact with someone from another community. Naturally, the rest of the group is shocked and angry that he has been telling someone about them. They think she could be a spy, like Dante.

Soon it’s Ezekiel who stands up and tells everyone that he trusts Eugene’s instincts and wants to know more about a possible new ally. Eugene says he came to Hilltop to start over, and he struggled a lot but then he found the voice on the radio. He asks them to spare him their ill will in hopes that they find someone who isn’t another villain.

Yumiko finds Magna on the porch and tells her that she can take her horse to go with Eugene and Ezekiel. She was never one to settle down anyway. Magna says she likes where they are but she thinks Yumiko would love the adventure and would be a good ambassador with the new people. Magna smiles as Yumiko walks away.

Jerry has his son on his shoulders and he sends him back into the cabin when he sees Ezekiel and his horse. Jerry asks if he’s really going and he’s not sure it’s a good idea, not because Ezekiel is sick but because he’s going to miss him. Ezekiel is hopeful that they are going to meet a new friend, even if that makes him a fool, but Jerry doesn’t see it that way. Ezekiel tells him to make sure their legacy lives on, and when they say goodbye Jerry starts to call him “boss” but stops and calls him by name instead. They hug.

Beta finds Alpha’s head on the pike. One of the Whisperers with him, Rufus, says that she was with Negan and that Beta is the new Alpha. Beta tells him that she can hear him and that he should listen to her. He pushes the man’s face up to hers and she bites him. “Just listen,” he tells him. He lovingly removes her head from the pike and cradles it in his arms.

Negan goes to the cabin only to find that Lydia is gone. Daryl is there instead. He punches Negan and wants to know where Alpha is, and Negan reveals that Alpha is dead. He killed her. He slowly reaches for his pocket and pulls out Alpha’s mask. Negan explains that he embedded with them to get close enough to kill her, and he says that it’s the reason why Daryl’s “girlfriend” let him out to begin with.

Out in the woods, Carol walks by herself. She becomes aware of someone calling her name, and when she stops she turns to see Alpha standing there. “I’m always watching,” Alpha tells her.
