Beta watches from the second story as the walkers congregate around him because of the music playing below. He smiles gleefully and suddenly pulls off part of his mask, dropping it on the album cover.

Negan apologizes to Daryl as they tie him up, telling Daryl he’s taking his sweet time. He wants to know why he doesn’t have the gun. The Whisperer immediately hands it to him. He tells Daryl that’s what he’s talking about with how the power feels. He smiles and makes Daryl kneel to him. Negan loves it. He tells him that he was right. He did like it, a lot. Daryl says he should probably shoot him, and Negan tells him not to threaten him with a good time. Then he shoots the Whisperer. When they’re all dead, Daryl demands to be untied and Negan laughs, slowly obliging.

The horses graze while the three travellers sleep by a fire. Ezekiel is still up, and when his horse collapses he sees that something is wrong. He cradles the horse’s head and sees the bite mark. When the horse dies, he tells Yumiko that he shouldn’t have come. She says this was an accident, but he makes her promise that if he falls then she will leave him behind. He can’t be the one to put them at risk. She tells him no one could know what the future holds, and that she made plans once upon a time and none of it worked out the way she thought it would. Right now they need the man who built a kingdom in the apocalypse to guide them.

Back in the boathouse, Carol struggles to free herself while a walker approaches. Alpha says her mom used to say that things would always work out the way they’re supposed to. She calls over to the walker, saying they’re ready for him.

No one is coming to save her, not Ezekiel and not Daryl (who, she says, won’t forgive her for what happened to Connie). She tells Carol to stop fighting because she will always lose people. She names off the people she lost: Sophia, Lizzie, Mika, Henry, Ezekiel, and even Daryl. Alpha says Carol chose her to appear because Alpha will get the job done.

As the walker approaches, Alpha tells her to look at the flowers and let it happen, but Carol frees herself and kills the walker in the nick of time. She collapses on the ground and passes out as Alpha stands over her. “It’s never too late,” Carol whisperers, and Alpha disappears.

The trio approaches the city.
