4. Did you know?

Later in episode 5, when Connie and Daryl – now joined by Magna – finally discover an injured and disorientated Kelly, it’s an important scene as we see Connie inhabit several roles in one scene.

She is – first and foremost – a worried big sister, relieved to see Kelly but concerned for her state of health and desperate for her little sister to know she’s there for her. But as the scene unfolds and Magna and Kelly confess they are the culprits who have been stealing supplies from Hilltop, Connie is forced into other roles.

She is the bridge between her old group and their new community, and she glares when Magna explains simply to Daryl “I don’t trust you” as an explanation for their behaviour. It is clear Connie trusts Daryl totally (as she later describes him as family), and wants to be settled with their new home. Yet she won’t betray her old family.

Throughout the unfolding events in the scene we see Connie shift, from concern about Kelly to anger at their behaviour, to taking control of the situation and ensuring that their group won’t come under fire or blame for Kelly and Magna’s action.

It’s a scene which shows the many sides of Connie and how quickly she adapts to the changing circumstances, but that above all she is loyal and protective of those closest to her – no matter what.
