2. You sign with a southern accent

Speaking of Connie’s influence, this scene shows the influence Connie has on all those around her.  In this case it’s Daryl, as we see in this adorable scene in “Lines We Cross” that after his time spent with Connie last season, Daryl has realised he wants to be able to communicate with her properly. We see he has been making the effort to learn ASL, as he clumsily uses this new language to talk to her about Dog, and Connie in turn teases him about his newly learned skill and his “southern accent”.

It’s such an important scene which shows in a wonderfully humorous and sweet way how vital it is that people reach out and make the effort to learn ASL or other methods of communication so that we are all inclusive – no matter the circumstances.

It also fights prejudice against ASL, highlighting that you can be as witty and warm with it as a language as you can with speech. Witty and warm are of course qualities that Connie simply oozes, and are highlighted in this cute exchange.

The importance of leaning sign language is also another thread which carries on through the season, as we see that other members of the communities have learned ASL to better communicate with Connie and Kelly. And in fact, in the fight against the Whisperers it is a secret weapon they can use to communicate with each other. It truly has become their superpower.
