Bromantic

Before this season began who would have thought that the comedy duo we needed was two overly tall men vying for the affections of a psychotic cult leader?

There is no doubt that this season, it was the Beta Negan bromance that brought the biggest laughs, and while other scenes may have been unintentionally funny, this scene in “Bonds” was intricately designed for chuckles galore.

As Negan tries to ingratiate himself with Alpha, she sets him tasks to prove his worthiness. nN this fairytale-esque trial, Beta is charged as guardian, drill instructor and motivational coach all in one. A difficult role given Beta is already instinctively jealous and distrustful of Negan (can’t fault the man’s instincts).

The resulting scene becomes a sniggerfest of competitive masculinity, crafted beautifully by fast edits, and a Hammond organ soundtrack that stops just short of Anything You Can Do from Annie Get Your Gun only by a slim margin.

Seeing Negan digging a pointless, endless hole is only the beginning as we see feat after feat of apocalyptic peacocking, with Beta bettering Negan in every turn – from carrying two walkers to Negan’s one, to his exquisite walker-skinning that leaves Negan’s shammy leather of an effort in the dust.

It’s a scene that could have easily been cut from a Simon Pegg zombie flick, but which manages to avoid becoming too ridiculous for our serious world. Props to Ryan Hurst especially for keeping Beta the ultimate straight man in one of TWD’s funniest scenes to date.
