Saving Daryl

When Daryl was bleeding out during his fight with Alpha and it looked like he wasn’t going to make it, Lydia came and saved the day.

As Lydia shows up to the scene of the fight, fans were left wondering who she would help – Daryl or her mother. After fleeing the survivors when Carol tried to use her to cause turmoil in the Whisperers, Lydia felt ostracised from just about everybody. She had a choice to make: return to the Whisperers and continue under a life of abuse or give the communities another chance and try to carve out a life that is about more than just survival.

Lydia’s loyalty to Daryl when push came to shove was not shocking given that Daryl is one of the few people who has welcomed and cared for Lydia since the pike incident. He is a father figure for Lydia, which is something she desperately needs as she combats her loneliness without Henry.

This moment becomes even more important when you take into account Lydia’s bravery to once again reject her mother face-to-face. As she leaves with Daryl, Lydia carves a message in a table for her mother: “YOUR WAY IS NOT THE ONLY WAY.” Lydia knows that Alpha and the Whisperers are too far gone and that she deserves a chance at truly living with the communities.
