Accepting her mother’s death

While Alpha constantly abused Lydia despite saying she was looking out for her, coming to terms with her mother’s death was never going to be easy for Lydia.

In one of the most well-acted scenes of the season, we see Lydia angrily hit Negan before breaking down into tears in his arms. This was another example of the fact that despite how much turmoil she faces in her life, Lydia is just a kid.

Yes, her mother was a horrible person who did unspeakable things, even to people Lydia cared about. Yes, Lydia probably knew deep down that it was going to come to this eventually. That doesn’t, however, make it any easier for her to just calmly accept her mother’s passing.

The fact that Alpha’s death came at the hands of one of the few people Lydia thought she could trust made it even more difficult to understand and accept. There’s no denying now that Lydia is now a full-fledged member of the communities, and this moment of truly and fully letting go of her Whisperer past was a difficult but necessary one she needed to face.
