Fighting for her future

Donning Henry’s armor, Lydia stood alongside many of the survivors on the front lines at the Battle for Hilltop.

Even while some people continued to doubt Lydia’s loyalty to their side of the conflict, Lydia risked her life for the future she wants for herself. She could easily have hidden with the children throughout the battle, or even stayed outside on her own as she did for a while after being manipulated by Carol.

When Mary tells her that Alpha is here to bring Lydia back to the Whisperers, Lydia’s response is simple but straight to the point: “I’ll never walk with her!”

While she didn’t help lead the survivors to victory or cause a huge shift in the battle, the significance of this moment is what it represents for Lydia as a character. Choosing to fight the very group she used to be a part of proves that Lydia has made her choice – she is one of the survivors now, choosing to live a real life rather than conforming to the Whisperer ways.

Lydia made it clear which side of the Whisperer War she was on during the Battle of Hilltop. Anybody who doubted her because of her past had no choice but to respect her and welcome her as one of their own. After the way so many people mistreated her because of her past affiliation with the Whisperers, look for them to try and make amends with her in the season finale and future seasons.
