3. Relationship realization

Eugene and Rosita have had an interesting relationship throughout their time in the apocalypse together. First stemming with Abraham and Rosita letting Eugene harmlessly sit in on their steamy love making, to Eugene being willing to do nearly anything for Rosita in order to keep her and her baby safe and protected.

Eugene has been putting his neck on the line for those he cares for and loves as of late, Rosita most of all. He went against every instinct in his body to make a bullet so she could attempt to assassinate Negan, and nearly got himself killed on multiple occasions. He often threw himself under the metaphorical bus for her in a sacrificial manner to keep her safe at all costs.

When the 49 hours of fighting defending wave after wave of walkers from Alpha’s horde finally eased up and the 2 of them returned to her house for some rest, they had a conversation that would lead to an epiphany changing everything.

He asks about Coco once again, seeing as he was the main caretaker for her while Rosita was regaining her strength, Gabriel was busy being a council member and Siddiq was struggling with PTSD, it’s no surprise he stepped up to look after Coco.

Rosita snaps at him and reaffirms that he is not Coco’s father, he never will be and he needs to accept that. Eugene, being taken back by this realizes and admits that he took the front line defense shift with her in order to protect her and keep her safe so she can make it back to Coco.

Unfortunately Rosita takes this as another opportunity to discredit Eugene’s capabilities as a person and survivor claiming that she’s always been the one protecting him. Eugene considers the possibility that he’s always had some hope in the back of his mind that he could prove himself worthy to her since she’s actually put him down quite a few times throughout the years making him feel guilty.

It’s almost as though he owes his time and services to her and the people around them because of the mistakes in his past. Upon this realization, he takes it to the extreme thinking that their entire friendship was based on the idea he could win her over some day, though we find out later this is far from the case.
