Lizzie and Mika – Look at the flowers

Lizzie and Mika weren’t in the show for very long, but they certainly had a big impact on Carol while they were there.

Lizzie was always a bit messed up, from thinking that the walkers are her “friends” to feeding rats to them to keep them fed. At one point, when Carol was traveling with the kids, Tyreese, and baby Judith following the destruction of the prison, Lizzie finally went too far. She killed her younger sister Mika, not realizing that anything was wrong with it because she would just come back as a walker anyways.

Carol was heartbroken, not only to see the death of another child but because Lizzie had no idea that what she did was completely unacceptable. In one of the show’s most iconic scenes ever, Carol was forced to kill Lizzie to prevent her from causing further pain to people, telling her to “look at the flowers” while she shoots her in the head in a scene reminiscent of the classic novel Of Mice and Men.

Carol knew that this was the right thing to do, but that didn’t make it any easier for her to go through with. This was one of the toughest decisions she has ever had to make on the show, and you can see the devastation in her eyes as she carries out the act. Like Sophia’s death, this was another moment when Carol could’ve allowed the despair to take over and drive her insane, but she remained strong and persevered through the pain.
