Henry – Don’t mess with Carol’s son

Carol’s adopted son Henry was a crucial part of why Carol was able to live a “fairytale” in the Kingdom alongside her husband Ezekiel for over six years.

So, when someone threatens Henry, Carol is quick to make them regret that decision. On their trip to drop Henry off at the Hilltop to train as a blacksmith, Carol and her son are confronted by Jed and some rogue Saviors. They knock Henry down and steal their supplies, including Carol’s wedding ring. At the time, Carol just lets it happen, warning Henry not to react. This is a new side of Carol we hadn’t really seen before; normally Carol would fight back and not back down.

Henry reminds her of this later that night, saying the following:

"“There’s right and there’s wrong. You protect what’s right and you fight what’s wrong. You taught me that. And I remember when you did. What happened?”"

Perhaps this reminder from her son is just what she needed, as later that night, savage Carol comes back in full force. Once Henry falls asleep, Carol sneaks out and exacts her revenge on the Saviors. Taking her supplies and wedding ring back, Carol then lights the Saviors on fire in their sleep, ensuring that they won’t be a problem for anyone else again.

This moment of pure badassery was a reminder that Carol is still a seasoned survivor who does anything to protect her loved ones, even after many years living in comfort in the Kingdom. It was a clear reflection of the fact that season 9 Carol was really the best version we had seen on the show so far. She was so happy with her life in the Kingdom, raising Henry and spending time with Ezekiel. Despite that happiness, she still always had that survival instinct ready to go when necessary. It’s a shame that Alpha and the Whisperers had to go and take that away from her.
