 1. Ed’s Dead: Episode 105 – “Wildfire”

In the beginning Carol appeared to be nothing more than a scared wife and mother, who could contribute little to the group beyond laundry and cooking. Yet, when her abusive husband Ed is bitten in the attack on the camp, we see a liberated Carol start to emerge. When she insists on ensuring her dead husband doesn’t return more dangerous than before, we see the steel in Carol that will see her through her many traumas to come.

McBride does an amazing job or portraying the conflicting emotions raging through a traumatized Carol, as she takes out years of pent up feelings, and the tables are turned when she plunges a pickaxe into her abuser’s head over and over again.

It’s only the first flash of who Carol would become, and though her magical moment in producing the grenade at the end of the season may seem more pivotal it is this pickaxe scene that shows us the depth of McBride’s acting and understanding of all the parts that go into making Carol who she is.
