8. Carol and Morgan’s parting of the ways: Episode 814 – “Still Gotta Mean Something”

Although Carol appears to have found a new home in the Kingdom, her worries aren’t gone and the battle with the Saviors rages on, threatening her friends old and new.

When Ezekiel’s adopted son Henry goes missing in the woods, Carol is confronted face to face with her worst fears unfolding all over again. However, the situation offers a chance for her and Morgan to cement their complicated relationship.

What began as a relationship of distrust and disapproval has gone through life-altering events, and these two power-houses of pain and brilliance struggle to deal with their past traumas and move forward. In a moving scene in the woods, we see them both confront their past and the difficult relationship they have with killing.

There’s no doubt that Lennie James and Melissa McBride are two of the finest actors the show has ever employed, and it’s never clearer than in this episode as Carol tries to hold on to Morgan and stop him tipping over the edge, just as he saved her when she ran away in season 6.

It leads to a parting of the ways, as Carol moves forward with a relationship with Henry and ultimately Ezekiel, while Morgan struggles on alone. McBride captures Carol’s tipping point superbly as always in these pivotal scenes.
