SDCC at Home takes place July 22. Could Fear TWD premiere that weekend?

These days, trying to predict television premiere dates is like trying to hit a moving target while riding on a horse, blindfolded. Things are in constant flux, but there is evidence that Fear the Walking Dead could premiere the weekend of SDCC at Home.

Fear the Walking Dead began production on season 6 in December 2019, and the show was scheduled for a production break when COVID-19 shut down filming completely. Fortunately, though, roughly half of the first season had already been filmed and according to AMC the episodes will air this summer.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond was pushed from its April premiere to the fall, and depending on when Fear 6A launches the shows could close out 2020. Now that we are in June, there are roughly 26 weeks left in the year and there are 10 episodes of World Beyond and (hopefully) a full 8 episodes of Fear. Add in the season finale of The Walking Dead and there really isn’t much time left on the calendar.

With all of this in mind, the next question becomes when we could see the season premiere of Fear the Walking Dead, and though there is no definitive information on the subject the most likely date would be the weekend of SDCC at Home, which runs July 22-26. The free event will feature virtual panels from many of the shows and movies that would have been in San Diego if not for COVID-19. Fans know that this is always a big weekend for The Walking Dead, so it stands to reason that AMC might use the opportunity to debut the new season of Fear.

Traditionally, SDCC has been the place where The Walking Dead trailer premieres and the cast shows up to hype the new season. The Fear the Walking Dead cast also shows up for the event and in most cases the show is already on the air, or on its mid-season hiatus, during the summer pop culture event. This year, though, there probably won’t be a trailer for The Walking Dead because filming hasn’t even started on season 11.

So what if the Fear the Walking Dead cast does a virtual panel for SDCC at Home on Friday, and then season 6 premiered on Sunday? (Or Friday night for AMC Premiere subscribers)

If the show premiered on July 26, and if there are 8 episodes available, then the mid-season finale would air September 13. World Beyond could air right away, either on September 13 or 20, and then close out the year. The math works, and it would mean 18 weeks of TWD content.

The unknown variable, of course, is the season finale of The Walking Dead. Depending on when post-production is finished (remember that post-production is done in Los Angeles, so it is subject to California COVID-19 guidelines), the finale could air before Fear or between Fear and World Beyond. It could serve as the launching point for World Beyond, too.

There are a lot of variables to consider right now, but a Fear the Walking Dead season premiere on July 26 makes a lot of sense, and it would get a big boost from having the cast together for a panel presentation that is free and open to everyone.
