We’re due for information about the Rick Grimes movies. Is an announcement coming?

The last time The Walking Dead fans received any meaningful information about the Rick Grimes movies was at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. There, in Hall H, a teaser revealed that Universal had picked up the rights to the movies, which set the course of the movies into a new direction. Will more news come during SDCC at Home?

SDCC has always been the place for big announcements about The Walking Dead. Perfectly situated in the summer ahead of the show’s return in the fall, it has been the place for new cast members to make their debut as well as to premiere the first trailer for the upcoming season.

2020 will be a bit different, of course. Thanks to COVID-19, SDCC was cancelled in May and will instead go ahead with a virtual edition, SDCC at Home, which will take place July 22-26. The Walking Dead has not been able to start filming season 11, so there will be no trailer for season 11, which might not arrive until 2021. There could be a virtual panel, though.

That brings us to the Rick Grimes movies. In 2019, attendees in Hall H sat in hushed wonder as a brief teaser revealed that Universal had optioned the Rick Grimes movies. This was big news, of course, because the movies had previously been destined for the small screen.

Moving to theatrical productions, though, meant that scripts had to be revised and more planning was needed. People who would have watched on AMC don’t need the kind of setting up and introductions that a theatrical audience would need. After all, the Rick Grimes movies could now become the first time new fans see anything from The Walking Dead universe.

Pre-production was rumored to have started in late 2019, but it doesn’t appear that much came out of it. Now, though, filming for the films will be pushed back so that any possibility of a Rick Grimes movie will come in late 2021 at the earliest. It’s more than likely to say that 2022 is more feasible.

COVID-19 is still spiking across the globe, and with so many actors living all over the world, including Andrew Lincoln in the UK, asking people to travel without a vaccine or some semblance of control over the virus just doesn’t work.

Panels at SDCC this year will be done virtually and there’s no question that The Walking Dead will take part in the annual event, which is now free and open to everyone. That means that this would be the perfect opportunity to give fans an update about the Rick Grimes movies, even if only to say that nothing is known at this point. That’s totally fair and completely understandable.

AMC needs to make some kind of announcement just so fans know where they are in the process. (With everything going on, no one expects the movie to come soon)
