FYC: Emmy voting season and The Walking Dead
Emmy voting season begins, but will The Walking Dead be recognized?
For The Walking Dead and its history of being snubbed by the Emmys, the old expression “always a bridesmaid and never a bride” rings true. Sure, the show has dominated cable television ratings but has yet to get the kind of critical recognition it deserves. Will 2020 change that trend?
You might have been seeing “FYC” showing up in ads while you’re reading entertainment news. “FYC” stands for “For Your Consideration” and is Hollywood’s way of politicking during the Emmy voting season.
The 2020 Emmy ballots have been mailed out to voting members and every year studios and networks submit as many names as possible in hopes of landing a few names on the list of official nominations. The voting period runs from July 2 through July 28, giving members ample time to view screeners and make their decisions.
Once the ballots have been returned, the Emmy committee will determine the top choices for each category and the official nominations will be revealed. Then, there will be one final vote before the awards are announced later this year.
AMC has a wide range of shows to choose from in their impressive stable, and not surprisingly that includes The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead. AMC has submitted actors, key episodes, directors, sound editors and visual effects crews for consideration on the ballots.
As with so many years before, The Walking Dead has been snubbed by the major awards shows, to the point of it being utterly unfair. Given the stellar performances from both casts, it’s crazy to think that Game of Thrones dominated the awards shows for a time and The Walking Dead can’t even land a single acting nod.
2020 could be the year to change that. Danai Gurira and Melissa McBride have a chance to do what Andrew Lincoln was never able to do (sadly). AMC has submitted their names for consideration in the lead acting category and if ever there was a chance for them to make it, it’s this year. The Emmy voters will be looking specifically at season 10 and both Gurira and McBride delivered amazing performances. Samantha Morton would be a perfect supporting role nominee.
Unfortunately, ratings and fan support don’t have much weight when it comes to getting names on the ballot, but that doesn’t mean they’re not appreciated. As Emmy voters do their thing, now is a great time to express your support for the shows. Who knows, 2020 could be the year the TWD Family has been hoping for.
