1) Learn to grow plants from seed

Having done it myself for a few years, I can tell you that growing many fruits and vegetables after they’ve already started is…not that tough. I’ve spent years growing peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and that mostly just relies on watering them everyday, killing off any caterpillars you find crawling on them, spraying them down with soapy water to get rid of aphids, and picking them when they’re ready to eat. Like I said, not that tough.

However, something that may be a little tougher, something Rick needed Hershel to teach him once the group reached the prison in The Walking Dead, is growing fruits and vegetables from seeds. I can tell you from experience that it takes a hell of a lot more than just plopping it in the ground, watering it, and picking it. You need to know what kind of soil conditions it needs, how much sunlight it needs, the ideal temperature, what plants are harmful to it, etc. With plants already growing, I’ve largely never had to worry about these things. All I had to do was wait until it stopped frosting before I planted them. Other than that, it was pretty easy.

Of course, your chances of getting fruits and vegetables like that take a nosedive once the chaos of the apocalypse sets in. They’ll either get trampled and left to rot in the sun, or get taken by someone else, either way: Don’t count on them.

This is why it’s so important to learn how to grow as many things you can from seed so that you’re never left hungry because you never how to grow your own vegetables from scratch.
