7) Surround yourself with people who can teach you valuable skills

I just finished talking about learning how to track and one of my suggestions was learning from an expert, but, there are so many more skills that you can learn from so many more people: Marksmanship, hunting, fishing, car repair, machine repair, medicine, hand-to-hand combat, carpentry, dog training, butchery, farming, I could go on and on.

The point is that there are people out there, maybe even people you know, who can teach you all of these things. Some people may charge you, some might just require hanging out with them long enough and keeping your ears open to learn, but, either way, there is wealth of knowledge out there in the form of people who know things that you don’t.

This is part of the reason I said you should get more acquainted with your neighbors last week, because any one of them might be willing to impart these valuable bits of knowledge with you if you’re willing to get to know them better.

Think about how much Rick and the rest of his group learned from other members: Auto repair from Dale, firearms handling from Shane, farming and medicine from Hershel, aikido from Morgan (who learned it from Dr. Eastman), water filtration from Eugene, I could go on and on, but, the point is, they taught members of the group things that they didn’t know before.

If you’re going to prepare for the apocalypse, do what you can to get your neighbors to join you, so that you can all share in each other’s knowledge. It will make all of you stronger in the long run, because the more all of you know, the better prepared you’ll all be in the event any one of you should succumb to the dangers of the apocalypse; Basically, if there’s one guy in your neighborhood who knows how to wire a house, and he teaches the rest of the neighborhood how to do it, if he were to die, at least his knowledge carries on in the rest of you.

Knowledge is power in a zombie apocalypse and the more people around you who know how to do things that can help you all survive, the more powerful you all become.
