AMC’s CEO says the plan is for The Walking Dead to film in October

Production on The Walking Dead has been at a standstill thanks to COVID-19, but now it seems like there might be a glimmer of hope. AMC’s CEO Josh Sapan revealed in an earnings call on Tuesday that there is a plan for two of their top shows to resume filming soon so that there is content ready and available in 2021.

According to Deadline, Sapan indicated that The Walking Dead is targeted for an October start date. The Deadline article says that filming would begin on season 11, but there was no indication whether this could include work on the six bonus episodes mentioned during the Comic-Con at Home panel in July.

News that work could resume soon is welcome, of course, provided that conditions are met to ensure the safety of the cast and crew. Tyler Perry’s studio in Atlanta has implemented a quarantine bubble similar to the one found with the NBA and Major League Baseball. Perry’s studio has become a little city so that no one leaves during filming, ensuring a safe atmosphere.

Of course, this could be challenging for a show like The Walking Dead, where many scenes are filmed on location in the middle of nowhere. Makeup and special effects will also be a challenge given the close contact between makeup artists and the actors.

While the idea of filming resuming in October is welcome, in the end everything will be determined by the status of COVID-19 cases in Georgia as the planned start date approaches. The cast and crew will need to quarantine for 14 days and be tested regularly in order to maintain a safe environment.

Sapan also indicated that production could resume on Fear TWD season 6 as early as late August. Fear the Walking Dead films in Austin, Texas, which has also been hit hard by the pandemic.
