Firepower #2 shows off Owen Johnson’s skill, previews darkness ahead

Firepower #1 by Robert Kirkman gave readers a wonderful look into the current life Owen Johnson has. He is a happily married family man, who loves his adoptive family, and adores the family he has built with his wife. The first issue in this series gave readers a peek into the family dynamic by showcasing many characters at a family barbeque. However, Owen also has secrets.

When issue #1 ends, it ends with a bang. Owen laying down next to his wife in bed about to sleep, with a threatening masked assailant looming over them. Issue #2 picks up the story without missing a beat. Having several pages of nothing but intense fighting.

Unfortunately due to demand, I have not been able to purchase and read the lengthy prelude that takes place 15 years before the first issue. So issue #2 hit me with a couple of surprises, the first being how skilled Owen is at fighting. Owen takes down 3 insanely talented fighters in his home, without waking his entire family.

The second surprise came after the family dog barks, waking up Owen’s wife. Readers know from the first issue that Owen’s wife Kellie can hold her own. She is an officer who, according to her co-worker and friend Reggie, is a beast. However, it turns out she knows of Owen’s power. It’s no shock she came to Owen’s aid, shotgun in hand, but the fact she seemed more annoyed and not freaked out was a head-turner. Kellie and Owen Johnson appear to be a true power couple.

In Firepower #2 Kellie mentions their kids should get training in case the family is ever really attacked. In the first issue, Owen races his daughter to the grocery store easily thanks to his powers, unbeknownst to her of course. This leads to the conclusion that possibly the kids are unaware of the secrets their parents have, or at least the severity.

Issue #2 ends off on just as big of a cliffhanger as the first issue did. One of the masked assailants lingers behind to spy on the Johnson family and then reports to the person they are taking orders from. None other than the missing Wei Lun! Having no context from the prelude, I’m on the edge of my seat issue and impatiently for Firepower #3 next month.
