If you loved Samantha Morton in TWD, be sure to catch her in Hulu’s Harlots.

For any Walking Dead fan, it is always exciting to see current and previous cast members in other roles. Although we won’t be seeing Alpha in the series any longer, you can catch more of the fabulous Samantha Morton in the BBC series, Harlots.

This isn’t your innocent period piece that fans of that genre are used to. Morton plays Margaret Wells, who is a brothel owner in 18th Century London. During this time in history, women have two choices financially, marry rich or sex work. Wells chose the latter but wishes more for her daughters, Charlotte, played by Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abby) and Lucy, played by Eloise Smyth (The Frankenstein Chronicles).

Wells has a rival in Lydia Quigley, a madam of a competing brothel where Wells used to work. Quigley is played by Lesley Manville (The Crown), and of course,  the two madams are out to get the other. At the same time, society is in the midst of a rise in morality while demanding the closing of such establishments. Because of the pressure of society to close down the brothels, law enforcement happily run raids on the establishments, causing more grief for the owners and the workers.

Below is the first season trailer, and you can see the costumes are gorgeous, and you definitely get the feel of 18th Century London.  Morton shared a photo on Instagram of herself as the character Margaret Wells.

The series got some of its inspiration from Harris’s List of Covent Garden Ladies publication that was published annually from 1757-1795 and listed names of prostitutes working in Georgian London. More recently, author Hallie Rubenhold penned the book The Covent Garden Ladies, which was also based on the older publication and directly inspired the Harlot series.

Sadly the series has been canceled after its third season. But, you can view all three seasons on Hulu now.
