After an earnings call, AMC CEO Josh Sapan reveals plans for a strong 2020 finish

When 2020 started fans were looking forward to 42 episodes of The Walking Dead Universe. 2020, of course, had other plans. Thankfully, though, Fear the Walking Dead and World Beyond had already filmed earlier in the year and had episodes ready, and the The Walking Dead season 10 finale had also been filmed. AMC CEO Josh Sapan wants to finish strong, which explains why all three shows are returning in October.

When the TWD Family tuned in to the TWD panels during Comic-Con at Home, they learned that the TWD season 10 finale would air on October 4, followed by the series premiere of World Beyond. Then, a week later, Fear the Walking Dead season 6 would kick off on October 11.

This news means Sundays will be a big event for AMC, and that’s exactly what Sapan wants. The idea is to have a very strong finish to the year, and with two big shows on the same night they can solicit advertisers who are looking for the biggest bang for their marketing buck.

The television and film landscape is changing almost daily thanks to COVID-19 and its far-reaching impact. Filming is slowly starting to get underway again after months of being shut down, but it’s not easy.

Safety guidelines are forcing changes to the number of people on set, and in some cases scripts are being re-written to minimize contact between actors. (Fight scenes, for example, are now watched so that the amount of face-to-face fighting is limited given that actors and their stunt doubles would be in close proximity with no masks)

Sapan’s decision to air Fear TWD season 6A and the first season of World Beyond together, along with the TWD season 10 finale, is a good move to help the network recoup some of its revenue losses and kick off 2021 with a stronger outlook. There will be new episodes of The Walking Dead coming early on in the new year, and it looks like production will resume for the other two shows as well.
