The Walking Dead season 1 marathon was a journey back to the very beginning

As some networks struggle to find ways to fill the gaps in the schedules, AMC’s decision to air a marathon of The Walking Dead season 1 was the perfect way to get fans excited for the upcoming season 10 finale on October 4.

There’s nothing like a trip to the past to appreciate the present, and that’s exactly what happened when AMC ran the first six episodes of The Walking Dead on August 30. Sure, anyone can have the same mini-marathon at any given time thanks to DVD sets, AMC Premiere and Netflix, but there is nothing like having a live television event with the ability to interact with other fans who are watching the same thing at the same time.

The difference, of course, is that when The Walking Dead debuted back in 2010 social media wasn’t what it is now. People were talking about the show, but the online TWD Family was still in its infancy and light years away from what it would become.

The season 1 marathon on August 30 was a chance for fans to come together to celebrate the beginnings of a beloved show, together, and to experience the magic from all corners of the planet. It says a lot about The Walking Dead that watching season 1 now is as thrilling as it was all those years ago, and it still manages to get viewers on the edge of their seats.

What’s more is that the opportunity to return to the show’s roots is a chance to appreciate the days gone bye. (Pun intended) Of all the characters in season 1, only two remain on the show in season 10. Carol and Daryl. Morgan is alive (or is he?) on Fear the Walking Dead. But the Grimes family is gone and seeing them again, and seeing their joyful reunion, is something special.

As the countdown to October begins, let’s hope AMC airs more of these season marathons. Let fans come together in real time to remember their favorite moments and relive them ahead of the season 10 finale, set to air in the same month the show premiered ten years ago.

The Walking Dead season 10 finale airs Sunday, October 4 at 9pm on AMC.
