The Walking Dead still has the power to break the internet
After all these years, The Walking Dead proves it can still break the internet
September 9 will go down in The Walking Dead history as the day the fandom learned that the beloved show would be coming to an end…twice. News of the show’s end, along with news of a Carol and Daryl spinoff, came out early in the morning after IGN broke the embargo that was set for 8:30am PT. Later, The Walking Dead officially confirmed the news. And then things got interesting.
To summarize all of the announcements, The Walking Dead is coming to an end in 2022 with a supersized season 11 that will feature 24 episodes. Then, in 2023, Angela Kang will helm a spin-off featuring Carol and Daryl. There will also be an anthology series called Tales of the Walking Dead from Scott M. Gimple that will explore the stories of characters from the past and present.
In sum, it’s a lot of news.
As soon as IGN’s Twitter post was posted and then deleted, the TWD Family started speculation as to whether the news was true. Since the tweet was posted around 6am PT, fans had almost two and a half hours to discuss and analyze the news before it was confirmed.
By the time news broke – officially – from the Skybound account (based on a press release from AMC), the terms “The Walking Dead”, “Carol” and “Daryl” were trending topics on Twitter.
In a lot of ways, IGN did AMC a favor by breaking the embargo and announcing the news early because it gave fans a chance to start talking about it in advance.
There are always people on the internet who remark that they didn’t know The Walking Dead is still on, or that they stopped watching the show. AMC’s decision to bring the show to a close in 2022 gives fans a timeline and the reassurance that the show isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and that the show has a bright future in an ever-expanding shared universe.
More than anything, though, it also proves that The Walking Dead can still “break the internet” after all these years. Not bad for a ten year old show.
