It’s the end of an era and the start of a new one as The Walking Dead ends in 2022

It’s not an ending so much as a new beginning for The Walking Dead as the announcement came from AMC this morning that the flagship show will end in 2022 with a supersized season 11, followed by a Carol and Daryl-centric spinoff coming from Angela Kang in 2023.

The news is at first glance shocking and upsetting, but when you consider the context it’s not as dire as it seems. The bonus 6 episodes from season 10, coupled with the as-yet to be aired season 10 finale, coupled with the announced 24 episodes in season 11 to give fans over 30 more episodes of the show.

The Walking Dead season 11 will feature 24 episodes

That’s the most important thing coming out of this news today. There are two whole years of the flagship show yet to come, and more exciting new content on the way.

The other big news, of course, is Kang’s new show coming in 2023 that focuses on Carol and Daryl. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities for The Walking Dead and its characters, and how their story will fit into the current narratives.

Not only that, but Scott M. Gimple is working on a new project in the TWD Universe as well. Tales of The Walking Dead will be an anthology based show focusing on characters from the series – past and present. The Walking Dead Universe is doing like every other universe and fandom in the galaxy: Changing and expanding.

Naturally, COVID-19 has wreaked havoc with production and it will have no doubt played a part in this decision. Contracts would need to be re-worked beyond 2022, so the decision to end with a massive season 11 that could be filmed in 2021 makes sense. It also opens up a bunch of opportunities to have cast members working on other TWD-centric projects because the proverbial cat is out of the bag. Since the announcement clarifies what’s happening on the show, the cast and crew will be able to focus on getting back to work and not worrying about keeping secrets.

And that’s just the show universe. Skybound and Image Comics are releasing The Walking Dead Deluxe edition of the series, and you know that after the success of Negan Lives there will be more one-shot comics in the works.

By the time The Walking Dead ends in 2022, World Beyond will have run its course as a two-season limited series. By then, we should have Rick Grimes stories in the form of movies, and Fear the Walking Dead could be in its eighth season.

In other words, TWD Family, there are many silver linings to this news today and the most important thing to remember is that the show might be ending but there are more stories to tell.
