The Carol and Daryl spin-off could have a larger role in the TWD Universe

With the news today of a super-sized 24 episode season 11 of The Walking Dead that brings the end of our beloved show and  the start of a Carol and Daryl spin-off, I have to wonder if/how it will connect to the long awaited Rick Grimes movies.

The news of the movies has been much talked about and when we look at some aspects of the show, comments made by cast and the heads of TWD and the limited time frame for the new show World Beyond, it makes sense that the Caryl spin-off would in some way connect to the Rick movies.

It’s hard to believe the last time we saw Rick was season 9 episode 5  “What Comes After”  being taken away on a helicopter by an unknown group and when we last saw Michonne in season 10 episode 13 “What We Become” she had just learned of the possibility of Rick still being alive and left to find him.  It feels like its been forever since the news of the Rick movies first broke and its been a long wait for anything concrete about possible plots and tie ins.

The confirmation that the new show World Beyond was only slated for 2 seasons, which pre-covid would have coincided with the finale of season 12 of TWD,  seems to deal with the community that has Rick.

We’ve also had Carol and Daryl talk of traveling to see if there are “others out there like us” and going to New Mexico.

Arguably, outside of Michonne and Judith, Daryl and Carol are the closest to Rick and if they were given clues he was still among the living it’s not a stretch to think they would go looking for him. After all, they have been with him since the beginning,  Daryl spent roughly 6 years looking for Rick and as we saw in season 10 episode 14 (“Look at the Flowers”) one of Carol’s driving forces in returning home is wanting to keep Daryl safe.

There is still a lot we don’t know as far as what the ending of The Walking Dead or what the Rick movies will look like, but one thing is for sure, the dynamic between Carol and Daryl, the on screen chemistry between long time co-stars Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus and with Angela Kang heading up the new show it should be a worthy addition to the TWD universe and a treat for fans of both characters and the show.
